Comment: I was very intrigued by this specimen, the way the perfect crystals stand out from the matrix makes it very dramatic. Wayne Leicht of Kristalle told me there was some talk this might not be from Germany at all, but from the Magma Mine in Arizona, as similar barite specimens were found there. An analysis of the matrix might be conclusive. A photo of this specimen taken by Collector's Edge on mindat was labelled: This classic specimen is a fantastic example of an old German locality. It has crystals up to 4 cm across that are chocolate brown with medium luster. A museum quality specimen. Size: 105mm x 125mm x 47mm Collection: Ex- Pellman Collection On the arkenstone site, found a very similar specimen from Magma: http://www.irocks.com/s_present.php?sid=LC-180&go=Go Comment about this specimen on Barite Bill's website (http://www.baritespecimenlocalities.org/) Howard Messing got this 10.5 cm specimen with 4 cm crystals labeled Brunndöbra, Vogtland, Saxony. But it is unlike Brunndöbra specimens. On Mindat the discussion has perhaps ruled out Magma mine, Arizona (same habit). There is some support for Zobes, a uranium deposit, also in Vogtland, Saxony. It looks amazingly like Eberhard Equit's drawing of barite from Niederschlema, in the Erzgebirge part of Saxony. But MinDat reports no barite from Niederschlema. Maybe Equit's model specimen was mislabeled? It is a very fine specimen and we should know where it is from!
